The group is based in 1997 by Charles Newman (Carl Newman). The name is borrowed from speech of telepreacher Jimmy Swaggart, declared: «Music is a new pornography». The New Pornographers often name "indi-supergroup" as its structure includes members of set of known indi-rock collectives in Canada.
