The family of Matthews has moved from Southern Africa to New York when to Dave was only two years. After tragical death of his father, the boy has returned together with mother to Johannesburg where has left school. Then Dave has got over the city of Sharlottesvill, staff of Virzhinija where in 1990 to it the idea to collect the group for the first time has come. By this time of Dave Matthews already decently sang and played a guitar and, of course, tried to write music so it is quite logical that once terribly it wanted to it to write down on the cartridge some own songs. Instead of simply most to sing in the pleasure and to accompany itself on a guitar, the guy has decided to enrich the compositions with several more tools. There were also assistants - drummer Carter Beauford and the saxophonist by CeRoi Moore which have already proved in a city as excellent jazz musicians. Soon 16-year-old child prodigy Stefan Lessard has joined children , knowing a bass guitar backwards, violinist Boyd Tinsley, and has finished formation of staff keyboard player Peter Griesar. However, in some years it has left group, as well as Tinsli.
