Before there was a group under name Bullet for My Valentine, participants of group had other project — group Jeff Killed John. JKJ Mettju Such (a rhythm guitar, a vocal), by Michael Pedzhetom (a leading guitar), Michael Thomas (drums), and Nikom Krendli (a bass guitar, a vocal) when they studied in Bridzhentsky college has been generated in 1998, in the city of Bridzhend, the Wales.

Participants Jeff Killed John wanted to follow a nu-threw tendency, but not to be similar to such group as Limp Bizkit.

In 2002 the group has let out a compact disc which included two songs Nirvana and Metallica, sung JKJ. As the producer Greg Hajver has acted, and the disk was called You/Play With Me. Financing was incurred by company Pynci helping beginning Welsh musicians., later the group has been invited on Radio 1 and has played on the air.

Financial difficulties have affected style of music and the group name, and after many variants it began to be called Bullet for My Valentine, and participants have started to play modern metalcore. At this time a nu-threw became less popular, and the group has decided to play the music, instead of to follow time tendencies.

Within nearby ten months Bullet for My Valentine played various concerts and tried to involve sound recording labels. During one concert in London, Roadrunner Records have become interested in group and have offered it the contract. But finally the group has signed the contract with other label, it was Sony BMG.
