In 1945 in a village of Najn-Majls in the north of Jamaica the Gauze Bean was born. Eighteen-year black girl Sedella Buker, the father — captain Norval of the Gauze, the fifty years' white seaman attached by the helmsman to the British Vest-Indian regiment was his mother. They married in 1944, the son, Robert Nesta Marli on February, 6th, 1945 was born. However under the pressure of a former family of Norvalu it was necessary to leave the wife and the son which he then visited only occasionally though supported them.

Being the teenager, the Gauze Bean has gone to the Valve in the late fifties. As well as many to it, the Gauze and his mother as a result have settled in Trenchtaune. Its friends were the same street teenagers who are not suffering the low positions in a society of Jamaica. Nevill Livingstone subsequently known as Banni Livingstone with which the Bean has taken the first uncertain steps to music became one of close friends of the Gauze. These two children admired with the unusual music which they borrowed from an ether of the American radio, especially the radio stations of New Orleans transferring the newest melodies of such actors as Fly Charles, Fets of Dominoes, Curtis Mejfild and Brook Benton. A bean and Banni also were interested also in black vocal groups, such as «The Drifters» which were extremely popular in Jamaica.

When the Bean has thrown school, appear, at it there was only one aspiration: to study in music.
